Museums & Galleries

Bayfield’s rich cultural heritage is captured at four museums and cultural centers across Bayfield County and Madeline Island. Each museum offers knowledgeable staff, fascinating artifacts, and fun for the whole family. 

Bayfield Heritage Association: 

This FREE history museum is open seasonally June-October and offers educational programming and museum exhibits and archival research. 

Bayfield Maritime Museum:

This FREE museum offers a nautical history of Bayfield, from shipwreck stories, fishing culture and maritime artifacts. Opening for the 2023 season, Friday, May 26.

Madeline Island Museum:

Complete your island experience with a visit to a museum dedicated to Madeline Island's storied past and energetic present. Experience more than 300 years of Island history from Ojibwe lifeways to the fur trade, from missionaries to loggers, from boat building to fishing  and more! Special children's exhibits and activities. 

Washburn Cultural Center:

This museum, housed in the Old Bank Building in Washburn, Wisconsin, has an antique gift shop, art galleries, shows, and hosts events. Built-in 1890 by A. C. Probert, it is listed on both State and National Registers of Historic Places. The Washburn Cultural Center is dedicated to preserving this unique building while serving as a community gathering place and focal point.
