Planning your first visit to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands? You’re in for something special. From island adventures and scenic hikes to local flavors and lakeside sunsets, this three-day itinerary is packed with can’t-miss experiences to help you make the most of your time here.
Day 1: Discover the Heart of Bayfield

Start your morning the Bayfield way with a great cup of coffee while you watch the sunrise or have a hearty breakfast. Grab a latte from Wonderstate Coffee, or Howl Adventure Center Café or settle in at the Bayfield Inn’s Lakeside Dining Room or Manypenny Bistro before heading out for the day.
From there, make your way around town and explore the many shops and galleries and find something uniquely Bayfield. From downtown, hop on the Madeline Island Ferry Line and consider renting a bike when you arrive. A ride to Big Bay State Park or Big Bay Town Park (about six miles) rewards you with sweeping views of Lake Superior and a peaceful introduction to island life.
Back on the mainland, or on the island, take time to connect with the area’s rich history. Visit one of the area museums to learn about maritime history, native culture, or see historic snapshots of downtown Bayfield.

Wrap up your first day with a drink and a relaxed evening. Enjoy a handcrafted spirit at Copper Crow Distillery, Bates Art Bar, or St. James Social; sip a local brew at Adventure Club Brewing or Clipper Brewing, or explore nearby wineries and cideries. It’s the perfect way to toast the start of your Bayfield adventure.
Day 2: Explore the Apostle Islands & Fruit Loop

Today is all about iconic Bayfield experiences.
Start with the Apostle Islands, 22 beautiful islands scattered across Lake Superior. Book a guided boat cruise, kayak tour, or sailing excursion to explore sea caves, historic lighthouses, and stunning shorelines.

After your time on the water, shift gears and head inland to the Bayfield Fruit Loop. This scenic drive winds through orchards and farms where you can pick your own fruit (in season) or shop for fresh-picked strawberries, cherries, and apples. Along the way, you’ll find farm stands, bakeries, and local goods that make for perfect souvenirs or snacks for the road.
As evening sets in, slow things down with live music. Catch a performance at Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua or enjoy Concerts by the Lake in Memorial Park Tuesdays and Thursdays June-August. It’s a relaxing, community-centered way to end a full day.
Day 3: Hike, Relax & Take It All In

On your final day, immerse yourself in Bayfield’s natural beauty one last time.
Start with a hike along the Lakeshore Trail at Meyers Beach, where you’ll find breathtaking views of the mainland sea caves. If you’re looking for something shorter or more family-friendly, Houghton Falls or Beaver Hollow offer equally beautiful (and easier) alternatives.

After your hike, head to the water. Find a sandy beach like Bayview Beach, Reiten Beach, or Cornucopia and spend a quiet afternoon soaking in the sights and sounds of Lake Superior.
Take a moment to pause, breathe, and reflect on your trip. It’s often these simple, peaceful moments that leave the biggest impression.
