Here in Bayfield, Wisconsin we don’t hibernate inside all winter waiting for summer to come. We embrace the beautiful snow, cold, ice caves and the many outdoor activities and sports. Mollie + Isaac did not disappoint with their outdoor January wedding.

Isaac is a full time fire fighter and EMT in Burnsville, MN . I own my own hair and makeup business and do lots and lots of weddings! Isaac and I met a few years before we started dating at our CrossFit gym in the cities, we quickly become best of friends and didn’t see anything beyond that. All of our friends thought a little bit different and asked when we were going to start dating! Once we finally decided to go for it we never looked back, and each day was better than the last! We now have a perfect little baby boy Axel and couldn’t be more thrilled for our little family! We can’t wait for forever!
We had a very laid back casual outdoor January wedding! I was on Madeline Island with family and a few close friends getting really at a family home, took the ferry across bright and early so I could be able to style Isaac’s hair… he had strict orders of keeping his eyes shut.
We then traveled to Isaac’s family’s dock on Lake Superior to do our first look, we couldn’t have picked a better location! Then off to Good Thyme for our ceremony where my brother officiated our big “I Dos.” Someone was definitely watching out for us- gave us 40 degree weather in January! We then ate a wonderful brunch and our perfect day was complete.
Isaac was born and raised in Bayfield and I have family connections to the area, having traveled there a lot growing up. It seemed the perfect place, and not far for the majority of our family.
The advice I tell all of my brides – Don’t worry and stress about the small things, no one is going to notice besides you. Think about the big picture and the outcome of the day: getting to marry your best friend!

I was given the privilege of photographing my fiends wedding a few weeks ago. It is no surprise to us that Bayfield, Wisconsin is an absolutely beautiful place to say your “I-Do’s”. Elopements, small intimate weddings and large destination weddings are frequently hosted by our little town. Between Lake Superior and the beautiful outdoors, there are many gorgeous backdrops for your wedding, especially a tent wedding.
We’ve put together a list of some of the local options for tent weddings, and what makes each and every one of them unique!
Known for its location right on Lake Superior, Superior Rentals is a beautiful venue that hosts tent weddings all summer long. With an on-property array of rental cottages, rooms and boat houses, up to 75 of your guests can stay right here! This is such a great benefit, and allows you and your guests to make a whole weekend out of your wedding together. Superior Rentals even boasts its own private, sandy beach, giving you the option to have a lakeside ceremony right on the property too!
Good Thyme Restaurant
“Settled on 5 acres with trees, gardens, & beautiful sunset view”, Good Thyme Restaurant is a very unique venue due to its versatility. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday night for dinner to the public, with space upstairs for parties/weddings up to 40 people. Use the entire restaurant for a day-wedding or the beautiful property for your ceremony and/or tent wedding! Perfect for smaller, intimate weddings of 100 guests or less, your tent wedding would capture the beautiful outdoors while dining on delicious, local food!

Madeline Island Museum
How unique would your tent wedding be if it was next to the oldest structure on Madeline Island? Madeline Island Museum is located right in the heart of downtown LaPointe, the town on Madeline Island. Their property offers the opportunity for you and your guests to view Lake Superior while celebrating the start of your marriage. With space for both an outdoor ceremony and tent, everything for your wedding could be in one space.

When most people think of beach weddings, they imagine a beautiful lake, sand between their toes and a quick, simple ceremony. Although all of these statements can be true, there is much more that goes into having your ceremony on a beach, a Lake Superior beach especially! We have spoken with local photographer Jamey Ritter of Bemused Design & Photography to hear her perspective on beach weddings – Enjoy!

From a photographer’s standpoint, what are a few great reasons to have a beach wedding?
Beaches don’t need any decoration. The setting itself is gorgeous. Sunshine and a light lake breeze are a great combination May-October on Lake Superior. It also gives you many different options for photos. Trees, the lake, docks, boathouses, are all fair game for couples and wedding party group photos.
What are some obstacles you have seen that come with having a beach wedding?
Nearly every beach wedding I’ve shot has been in full sun. “Great!” you say. Full sun makes everyone squint, lots of shadows, not to mention a beautiful bride typically in a white dress that is now as easy to look at as it is to stare at the sun. Do your photographer a favor and make a mental note of some shady and beautiful sites nearby.

Have a back up site
Rain seems to be especially difficult to predict here. A light mist is tolerable, but our summer storms can bring lots of rain, wind and big surf. Always have a backup plan.
Do you have any recommendations for couples planning a beach wedding?
The beach is a beautiful, romantic place to get hitched. Just plan for the contingencies and have a wonderful wedding day!

Whether you choose a traditional wedding cake, cupcakes or a dessert table, your options for something-sweet at your wedding are endless!
Ginamarie Kinney Anderson has been a pastry chef for 8 years and owns Harbor House Sweets in Washburn, Wisconsin. Ginamarie can supply handcrafted chocolate favors for your wedding, along with a wedding cake or any dessert! Read ahead for the latest pastry trends, Ginamarie’s recommendations for couples searching for a bakery/specialty shop and information about Harbor House Sweets!
Tell us a little bit about yourself and Harbor House Sweets. What inspired you to become a pastry chef?
I was born and raised in upstate New York. I come from an Italian family. I’ve lived in 6 different states around the country but my husband, David, is from the area and that is what brought us here. I like to go to the Twin Cities monthly for my city fix! David and I have two children.
I have a small list of bakers in my family and I have baked since I was young. I wanted to get some science, skill and technique behind the trade so I went to culinary school in the Twin Cities. At Le Cordon Bleu (LCB) I doubled up on classes to finish early. While at LCB I would stage/work for free to learn more with a former chef of Charlie Trotter, Michelle Guyer. I then continued my education with an internship in Naples, Florida. I worked at Mikkelsen pastry shop. I was fortunate to work with a chef from Denmark, France, and a chocolatier from Belgium. I’m always looking to learn more and continue to improve my skill/trade.
I’m a hard worker and I thought it was time to work hard for me. Harbor House Sweets was put in plan. The name was inspired by some places from my roots and the fact that my husband and I love water. Some days I just want to make chocolate and some days I just want to bake. I love all of it and like to package pretty things.

What can you provide for weddings and/or bridal showers?
I like to provide for big events just as much as small ones. I can make individual desserts, specialty chocolates, or a cake. Harbor House Sweets can provide favors for any occasion, or a sweet treat for your liking. Always inquire, ideas traditional and new are welcome and I’m happy to make it.
What are some of the latest pastry trends you have seen for weddings?
I would say the most recent trends I have seen are dessert tables. Some people do not like big desserts but they do like to have a little something. A couple of years ago, I had a fabulous bride that wanted cake pops, cupcakes, petit fours and just a ceremonial cake. I loved setting it up, it was one of the prettiest I had done. She had said to me, “I think sitting there eating a piece of cake is so daunting. I want my guests to come pick up their sweet treat when they are ready.” That thought has stuck with me ever since. I liked that idea.
Another pastry trend is a small 2-3 piece chocolate box favor- one on each place setting. People really like that, it looks nice and they aren’t going home with something they will never use.

When couples want to hire you for their wedding, what is your typical process?
I get a few ideas via email or phone to see what they like so that when we meet they can have a cake/dessert tasting. We meet at Harbor House Sweets, where I usually have a form we go through to see what they like and what they are looking for.
I require a deposit to secure the date. Each of us gets a copy of the contract so I know what is expected of me and they know what they are getting. Dates fill up fast and when there is a wedding, I don’t like to have other events on that day.
When do you recommend couples begin speaking to bakeries/specialty shops?
Brides should speak to bakeries right away! People always think they have time and the cake is last but there is so much more that goes into cakes/desserts. Couples are always surprised at the end of our meeting at how much info I need from them and how much is involved. They don’t realize it is just as important as the food. You are planning your guests’ dessert. Bakeries/specialty shops do not like to have more than one big event in a day. They want it to be a hit just as much as the customer does.
Are there any other recommendations you have for brides?
My advice is to be comfortable with what you want and what you like. Everyone has a budget and no matter what, it will be beautiful. Read your contracts and make sure everything is in order. The contract is for your protection as well as the bakery /specialty shop. You want to make sure you get everything you need. Don’t be shy to ask questions, this is your day. Enjoy!!
