Do you have a love for the water, especially Lake Superior? Does a small, intimate ceremony sound perfect to you? Are you looking for a very unique wedding and experience for you and your guests?
The Bayfield area offers a number of charter businesses that can take you and a small group out on Lake Superior for your ceremony, and even officiate it themselves! This is exactly what Steve and Rhea did this inAugust through Dreamcatcher Sailing. Read about their Bayfield Wedding, and how they went about planning a ceremony on Lake Superior.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you met.
We met in Lowertown, St. Paul at a gallery show. Steve is a graphic designer and art director and I am a photographer. We first became best friends before realizing we were actually in love with each other. We had been best friends for 2 years and together for 5 before marrying. When Steve proposed to me, we were on the sailboat along the north shore from Duluth to Silver Bay. It was the same place we ended up getting married, on the bow of my dad’s boat.
Where and when was your wedding? Tell us a little bit about it.
We had our grooms dinner on August 12th at Maggie’s in Bayfield, early on in the day and then had desserts and drinks at Wild Rice later that evening. Our wedding was August 13th at Presque Isle Bay on Stockton Island. When we arrived and put anchors down, the morning storms cleared and skies opened up into a bright blue and sunny sky. Both of our mothers decorated the front of the boat with yellow Gladiolus flowers (Rhea’s favorite). Then we had our ceremony on the bow of the boat with our fathers officiating. Once the ceremony was over, we grilled some Romocky brats (a local farmer in MN) and ate a late lunch. Next we went swimming and played water frisbee on the beach for hours. After that I made greek pasta salad, we drank and chatted till night fall. 2/3’s of us stayed over night on the island. The rest went back to hotels and stayed overnight in Bayfield. We had just under 20 people with us for the wedding.
How did you decide on Bayfield for your destination wedding?
Well, I (Rhea) grew up sailing Lake Superior with my father. I spent most spring, summers, falls and some winters in Bayfield working on the boat and sailing with my dad. When Steve was introduced to sailing and Lake Superior, he immediately fell in love with it, which was kind of a deal breaker if he didn’t. It seemed to just fit into place.

What made you decide to get married on a sailboat on Lake Superior?
When we were looking to plan our wedding, we wanted it to be on a boat, and neither one of us wanted it to be in a fantasy location (i.e. Bahamas, Hawaii, etc.) We felt it was important to get married in a location that had meaning to us. A place that was based in our reality. So when thinking about our favorite places, Lake Superior, and Bayfield was the undeniable choice.
How did you choose Dreamcatcher Sailing?
When we were looking for help getting some of our family members to the island, we couldn’t find any large motor sailboats for rent. It was actually a little frustrating. We were looking for overnight motorboats for our friends and family that were not comfortable the way we were with sailing. But by not finding this, it allowed us to take our family and friends on an even greater adventure and sailing trip. We looked into some boat rentals, but at the end of the day, really settled on a captained trip. The people from Dreamcatcher were the most receptive, accommodating and helpful that we could find. We are so glad we chose them to help us make our wedding a reality, it was perfect.
Anything you would recommend for other couples getting married in Bayfield?
I think our top recommendations are:
- Get married in the way you want to in a place that has sentimental value to you. It’s a game changer.
- Double, triple, quadruple check in with everyone you have hired, even when they say you don’t need to. Give them your number when they say they don’t need it. Always take theirs.
- Make sure you are not alienating anyone. It’s a small town and when you leave, they have a life after you.
- Book everything FAR in advance to make sure you have everything you need to make your special day happen.

You’ve discovered (or heard of) the allure of a Bayfield vacation – so why not elope in Bayfield?

The Romance– There is no doubt that Bayfield is a very romantic destination. Named the most romantic town in Wisconsin by Discover Wisconsin, Bayfield is perfect for honeymoons, weddings, elopements and getaways. Just last week, Pastor Weber of Happy Feet Weddings performed a ceremony for one such couple who came to the area exactly for that reason. They wanted their wedding to be romantic and intimate, and knew that the Bayfield was just what they were looking for.
The Options- With so many bed and breakfasts, day-spas, orchards and outdoor adventures, the Bayfield area will not leave you bored! Old Rittenhouse Inn has elopement, vow renewal and honeymoon packages and will take care of all the details for your stay! If getting married on a boat is more your style, charters such as Manitou Sailing Charters and PMG Charters can take you out on the water and marry you amongst the Apostle Islands.
The Vendors- Although Bayfield may be a small Wisconsin town, it has a wide array of wedding vendors right here for you to choose from. Lace & Brass Events is a local wedding and event planner, who will plan an elopement for you – from hiring your officiant, photographer and ceremony music, to ordering your bouquet and making dinner reservations for after your ceremony.
The Freedom- Small, intimate elopements allow you to break free from typical wedding traditions. You are able to make your elopement exactly what you would like it to be – whether it’s just the two of you or includes your immediate family and friends. Elopements can be simple enough that you only need a week or few to plan it – not 2 years! Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, who took the elopement photos seen above, was contacted only days beforehand!
Whether you are planning a bachelorette party, honeymoon or a pre-wedding spa day – Superior Body Massage & Spa has a variety of packages and services for you!
This day-spa is located in downtown Bayfield. Open year-round, they offer massage, facials, spa treatments, manicures, pedicures and facial waxing.
Read on to hear about the bachelorette groups they have hosted, their newly renovated spa, the bridal packages they offer and their recommendations for brides!
Tell us a little bit about yourself and Superior Body Massage & Spa.
Superior Body Massage & Spa is on the eve of its 10th anniversary. We opened in May of 2006. We have been at the same location the entire time, adding on more space every few years as we’ve grown.
We finished our last remodel and the addition of almost 1000 more square feet of spa space at the end of last year. It turned out beautifully and we now have three treatment rooms (a couples massage room, a wet room for spa treatments and an individual treatment room for massage and skin care). We also have a large nail service room with two spa pedicure thrones and our manicure station.
With the remodel we were able to make our reception area much larger to include retail space of some great new product lines and also make our waiting area much more private for groups.
What inspired you to start your own spa here in Bayfield?
I had moved away from the area for a couple of years and my then-boyfriend, now-husband convinced me to move back here with him. There was no one doing anything like this at the time – and there still isn’t – so it was the perfect time to open a day spa here.
What wedding related services do you provide?
We offer massage, facials, spa treatments, manicures, pedicures and facial waxing.
Do you have a bridal package? If so, what does it include/entail?
We do have a bridal package that can be viewed on our website, it includes a massage or facial as well as a manicure and pedicure. Although groups do book this package, often bridal groups design their own package because we have such a large service menu and typically not everyone wants to do the same services. For bridal groups of four or more people, I discount their custom designed packages 10% when they book by May 1st.
Have you hosted any particularly memorable wedding-related parties/groups?
We recently had a large bachelorette group come in that were all dressed in red flannel, which was very cute. Another group did a Geisha theme, we hung paper lanterns and they drank sake. We have had groups as large as 14 and as small as just the bride and her best friend. Some bring in loads of munchies, desserts and champagne and make a party of it. Others just really want to chill-out before the big day. They are all a pleasure to have here.
What is the most common service you provide for newlyweds on their honeymoon?
Any of our couples massage services are very popular for newlyweds. Bayfield is a hot spot for honeymooners wanting to stay within driving distance of their homes and there are some Saturdays where we have three or four newlywed couples. It’s fun to hear them congratulate each other.
Do you sell gift certificates?
We do sell gift certificates both on our website and at the spa.
Are there any recommendations you have for brides?
From a logistical side, I recommend handing the spa-day planning off to a bridesmaid or family member. There are so many details and decisions with any sized wedding and it’s really enjoyable for brides to just get to show up and enjoy themselves without having to organize another event. That being said, plenty of brides really want to make sure that the day goes as they envision, in which case I recommend contacting me directly a couple months prior to help design the perfect spa day for you.
What advice do you have for couples (or brides) planning their wedding in Bayfield?
Plan an extra few days in Bayfield after your wedding so you can relax and enjoy Bayfield as a newly married couple.
Muffins, quiche, local fruit, freshly brewed coffee… who doesn’t love brunch?!
Many couples decide to extend their wedding weekend festivities into Sunday. Whether the concept of brunch the day-after your wedding is new to you or something you’ve already contemplated, here are some tips and ideas for your brunch here in Bayfield.
Mini Quiche and Breakfast Pastries made by The Fat Radish
Who to invite?
Patti Holman, owner of The Fat Radish, has found that 25-50 guests is the most popular guest count for brunch. A day-after wedding brunch is perfect for those who want to spend more time with their wedding party, immediate family and out-of-town guests.
Your wedding day will be very busy and you may wish you could spend more time with the guests that traveled to celebrate with you. Not only would inviting your out-of-town guests be a nice gesture, but it would allow you to have quality one-on-one time with them without being distracted.
Hosting a brunch is a very sweet way to say thank you, again, to your wedding party and immediate family. By Sunday everyone is relaxed and enjoying each other’s company.
Yogurt Parfaits Provided by Lace & Brass Events, LLC
Where to host?
The really nice thing about a day-after wedding brunch is there are no rules! It can be as formal or informal as you would like. Emily Jeffress, owner of Lace & Brass Events, LLC, suggests hosting your brunch either at or near the location where your guests are staying. This will eliminate additional traveling for you and your guests by keeping the logistics simple. A few suggestions for the location: the hotel where you had room blocks, a local restaurant, the venue where you had your wedding or a family member’s home.
Fresh Roasted Coffee from Big Water Coffee Roasters
What to serve?
Noreen, owner of Café Coco, says quiche and pastries are her most requested brunch items. Other popular brunch items are local fruit, honey baked ham, yogurt parfaits, breakfast sandwiches, juice and coffee.
Big Water Coffee Roasters is our local source for fresh roasted coffee that can be picked up or delivered in large cambro containers, along with everything you would need for coffee service. Add a mimosa bar or bloody mary bar to spice up your brunch! Provide all of the fixins’, allowing your guests to design their own drinks.
