Interview with Apostle Islands Cruises

Featured: A Bayfield Intimate Wedding

December 15, 2017

Most of the couples that get married in Bayfield fully embrace everything we have to offer! One way of doing this is by making a whole weekend out of your wedding, instead of just one quick day. With many guests coming here for the first time, show them around and recommend your favorite things to do! This is exactly what David and Efrie did for their wedding!

With just 24 guests, David and Efrie had an incredibly memorable wedding weekend spending time with family, taking in the Apostle Islands and even giving beautiful local gifts in gift bags to each guest. Read all about their wedding and how it came together so beautifully!

Tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you met.
David is a computer programmer, originally from North Carolina, and Elizabeth (nickname: Efrie) is an architect, originally from Milwaukee. We met almost 10 years ago through Match.com while living in New York. Since then, we’ve lived in Connecticut, Michigan, and Philadelphia (where we live now).

Our first date was a concert in New York, but the most memorable part was playing several very competitive rounds of Connect 4 at a dive bar, where we went for drinks before the concert.

What made you choose Bayfield for your wedding?
David grew up spending his summers at his grandfather’s lake house in the Poconos, which is a place that is very special and important to his family. He proposed while we were hiking around the lake.

Efrie’s family has a similarly special place: her grandmother’s cabin on the Brule River. It made sense to us that in officially merging our families, each of these very special places would be a part of the festivities. One of the highlights of trips to Brule for the last 16 years has been a night in Bayfield for dinner at Wild Rice Restaurant (we missed their first year they were open), and Efrie and her mom started talking about how beautiful the location would be for a wedding from the very first time they saw the restaurant, so it sprang to mind immediately when we were brainstorming possible wedding locations.

Tell us about your your wedding!
Our weather was fairy-tale perfect, and we were so excited to be able to share our wedding with our very small party of 24 guests, for most of whom it was their first time to Bayfield. They all left stunned at how beautiful the area is (which is why we picked Bayfield for our location!) We kicked off the weekend with a champagne cruise around the Apostle Islands, giving all our guests an intro to the local history, with delicious appetizers from Ashland Baking Co. We followed the cruise with a dinner at Ethel’s, teaching everyone about the very important food group of cheese curds.

The day of our wedding, we spent the morning eating a luxurious breakfast from Pinehurst Inn, and then Efrie was whisked away to get ready. Our guests spent the morning and afternoon enjoying all that Bayfield has to offer – some went sailing, others went hiking, and some just strolled around town browsing the shops. Our wedding ceremony took place in the evening on the back deck of Wild Rice, and we were thrilled to find out that Mary Rice was actually having dinner at the restaurant that night!

Efrie’s brother Dave and his wife Megan conducted our ceremony. One of the most touching parts was a piece we adopted from the Quaker tradition (which has a very important place in the history of our current home state, Pennsylvania), where everyone attending is given the opportunity to impart blessings and words of wisdom to the couple. Hearing the best wishes and love from everyone was definitely a highlight of the night!

After we were introduced for the first time as Mr. and Mrs. Escott, we celebrated with a delicious meal at Wild Rice. We also had each of our guests write us notes to put into boxes with bottles of wine that we will open and drink at each of our milestone anniversaries, so that we can experience their words of wisdom and blessings at our first year, fifth year, tenth year, and twenty-fifth year of marriage.

Are there any recommendations you have for someone looking to get married in the Bayfield area?
Start your planning early! Everyone is incredibly helpful and excited about making all your dreams for your big day come true, but it’s important to have enough time for all the plans to come to fruition (and to have the time to work in all the extra ideas once they start popping up). Also, it’s a really good idea to talk to people at all the restaurants and B&Bs for recommendations on who to use for what — we never would have found our amazing florist (Kelly) if we had only looked at business listings.

Featured: A Madeline Island Wedding

July 3, 2017

Bayfield, the Apostle Islands and Lake Superior have an incredible amount of magic and charm to them. Many of the couples getting married in the area feel this and are drawn to spend their special day here!

Michele and Rick are one of those couples, who could not see their wedding day happening anywhere else but here. We hope you enjoy reading all about their beautiful story and their wedding on Madeline Island.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you met.
Rick and I met in early 2006 on Match.com. 😉 He was recently divorced, and I had a brick-and-mortar business that basically consumed every waking hour of my life. One of my staff members suggested (actually… insisted) that I join Match to “get a life.” So I did. And after six months of rolling my eyes at the concept, I received a lovely message from this very thoughtful man who wrote well and spoke of his love for the water. It was “best friendship” at first sight… We talked non-stop for hours – weeks – and then one day that little *spark* happened. The rest, as they say, is history.

What made you choose Madeline Island for your wedding?
While our relationship began where we live in Minnesota, it was built on the water. Rick has been sailing the Apostle Islands for (now) over 20 years. When we met, he showed me photos of his sailboat and the islands. I was obviously intrigued, but having grown up and establishing my love of the water on Lake Minnetonka (and several stints on the Pacific Ocean), I figured Lake Superior was just another body of water to love.

That’s an understatement.

When I first arrived at the marina with Rick late in the evening on May 19, 2006, it took my breath away. I had never seen so many stars. The sound of the breezes across the water and the clinking of the lines against the masts. I was instantly hooked. We sat in the cockpit of the sailboat with glasses of wine and watched the stars until the wee hours of the morning (something we still do to this day). The entire weekend was “charmed.” There were so many moments where I wondered who this guy had made deals with in order to orchestrate so many wonderful moments. Now I know. Rick is an absolutely wonderful man to begin with, and he was very excited to show me his Happy Place. “His” Lake Superior. But, as you know, Lake Superior “speaks” to you. She had called to him years before, and she “greeted me by name” the moment I arrived (and I’m pretty sure Her first words were, “What took you so long?!”).

We’ve been answering Her call together ever since. Almost every weekend during the summer months on our boat, and several times throughout the winter when we “need” to visit her to re-charge our winter-weary batteries. We adore “Mother Superior” and everything that surrounds her.

But I digress… Why Madeline Island? On more than one occasion, we saw weddings happening on the island as we cruised by on our boat. Each time, they took our breath away. Weddings have a way of doing that, but to us – the water lovers that we are – there just seemed to be something extra magical about it.

The business I mentioned earlier was a wedding and event design company. We designed, decorated, flowered, and foofed over 1,500 fabulous weddings and events of all sizes. As much as I loved the many venues we worked at in the Twin Cities, there just didn’t seem to be one that was right for us. Neither of us wanted a “big” wedding. We just wanted it to be “us.”

We started tossing around the idea of having our wedding in Bayfield, and fell in love with the idea. We contacted on of our favorite Bayfield chefs to see if he was available, and as luck would have it, his daughter was getting married on the same date that we had chosen. We then toyed with the idea of getting married on Madeline. Called a few places, looked around a bit, and ended up falling in love with The Inn on Madeline Island after a brief chat with Susan. We could immediately envision our wedding there, and everything just fell into place.

Tell us about your wedding!
Knowing we’d have to “drag” 75 of our closest friends and family members all the way up there, we put together a website that listed all the details of our wedding, and every imaginable resource in Bayfield and on the Island: hotels, B&Bs and inns, restaurants, shopping, transportation, all of our favorite spots – you name it. We wanted to make sure people had plenty of options for planning their trip, and that everyone felt like they “knew the area” when they arrived so they’d enjoy themselves more while they were there.

We told everyone it was a Casual Island theme: Sun dresses and sandals, Hawaiian shirts and khakis. We arranged for a pizza party at The Inn, and enjoyed greeting our guests at that gathering spot as they arrived on the island.

We also planned a special little surprise for our guests. On a recent trip to Black River Harbor, we met a woman who came down to the water to “wish the Lake Goodnight” each night. We loved the way she appreciated the Lake, and decided to incorporate that appreciation into our wedding. We were also lucky enough to have four members of the Pipes and Drums of Thunder Bay agree to come and play for our wedding when we reached out to them on a long shot. It was the best-kept secret ever! We were so excited!

We orchestrated the ceremony around the bagpipers. Starting with our beautiful flower girls and ring bearer (our nieces and nephew), Rick’s three sons, and a selection of songs that we had chosen beforehand, we walked down the winding aisle, through all of our friends and family, and “met” down at the end of the dock to have our first look and a brief moment together. As planned… We turned around on the dock to face our guests as the bagpipers began to play. One of the highlights of our wedding (for us) was watching our guests’ faces as they started hearing the bagpipes and wondering what was going on. As they bagpipers marched around the building, everyone smiled and stood up. There were cheers and clapping, and lots of pictures being taken. It was such a treat!

After they played several pieces, they piped as we walked up the aisle (dock) together and stood before our longtime friend, Captain Dave, who married us. We then enjoyed an amazing dinner (Prime Rib and Lake Superior Lake Trout with Lemon Burre Blanc) prepared by The Inn, and then promptly celebrated our “sweet luck” with a gorgeous Sweet Table and ‘Tuxedo’ wedding cake – all prepared by April and company at Country Cake Cupboard – one of my absolute favorite Twin Cities bakeries. We had worked together on countless weddings over the years, and I just love her work. There were a few things I had my heart set on for our wedding, and April’s Tuxedo cake with Italian Mocha Cream filling was one of them.

We were very fortunate to have a lot of help with preparations and set up… Everything from the absolutely incredible invitations that my talented friend, Gina designed and created, to the collection of silver trays that held all the sweets on our dessert buffet, to the photos and music we shared during the wedding, and even the Tiki torches that were set out just before sunset. It was all relaxed, casual, “island-y” and fun.

At 7:03 p.m., the bagpipers again began playing “unexpectedly” as the sun started to set. We all gathered at the beach and “wished The Lake goodnight” as they played. It was magical.

As the evening progressed, we chatted, hugged, mingled, and even danced a little. We felt so lucky to be able to celebrate our special day in such a special place. And we still celebrate our special day each time we come to Madeline Island or see “our” beach.

Are there any recommendations you have for someone looking to get married in the Bayfield area?
YES!!! Spend some time in the area if possible before your wedding. Visit a few times. Explore a little. Find the things that you love most about the area and incorporate those things into your wedding.

Hire a professional wedding coordinator who knows the area, knows the best vendors to hire for your wedding, and knows your day-of Wish List well! I can’t state this strongly enough! After doing as much wedding work as I had done over the years, I just figured it would all come naturally when it came time to plan my own wedding. And it did. But there are SO MANY reasons NOT to do it all on your own, I don’t even know where to begin.

Do it. Splurge. Hire a professional coordinator that you can trust to “watch over” all the little details that will make your wedding day the day you dreamed of… Whether it’s making sure you get your much-needed skim latte with one raw sugar the morning of the wedding, keeping an eye on “those” family members, or making sure the gardenias get tucked in your hair just before you walk down the aisle… Let your coordinator handle the details so your only “job” is to thoroughly enjoy every moment of your day. xo

Bayfield Summertime Proposal

March 31, 2017

Many couples, families and friends plan trips to Bayfield every year. Whether you’re a first timer or you travel here every summer, the Bayfield area is a perfect destination for your getaway. What better way to propose to your sweetie than surprising them during your vacation!

Matt and Jenn live in Milwaukee and planned a summertime trip up with their closest friends. Jenn had no clue that Matt had another reason for their trip- to propose to her! We spoke with Jenn all about their trip and proposal, we hope you enjoy it!

Tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you met.

Matt and I met in 2010 at Valparaiso University in Indiana. I was a freshman in college at Carroll University in Wisconsin and took the train through Chicago to visit a friend that ended up being in the same fraternity as Matt. Matt was so sweet, he offered me his coat when I was cold and (reluctantly) watched Friends with me. As they say, the rest is history. Matt graduated in 2012 and moved to Milwaukee so we could begin our forever together.

What made you choose Bayfield for your trip?
This is a fun story. So we were sitting in one of our favorite Milwaukee bars with Matt’s childhood friend Pat and his wife Meghan planning out our summer. It was the dead of winter and we wanted to road trip somewhere fun! We planned a trip to Bayfield to kayak the Apostle Islands. The weekend was all set in July, I was in charge of the playlist (bad idea), and we were excited. Somewhere between that January weekend and July, unbeknownst to me, Matt decided to bring a ring!

Tell us about your Bayfield trip and your proposal!
Early one Friday morning in July we picked up our friends, packed the car, grabbed coffee and set out north! Even just the road trip up was a blast as we climbed further and further north and made note off all the gorgeous scenery and local color.

Emily, of Lace & Brass Events, is a long time friend of Matt so he reached out and consulted with her on best places to stay, eat, things to do, candy shops to eat everything at, etc. She was instrumental in not only planning a wonderful vacation getaway but also a beautiful proposal!

So we arrive to the perfect Winfield Inn, settled in and met everyone for dinner. We then spent the evening walking around town a little bit and taking it all in. The next morning we jumped on the ferry to Madeline Island to meet up with our kayak guide. We set off in our kayaks and had an amazing time cruising in and out of all the caves along the shore.

After a FULL day of kayaking we were all sore, mosquito bitten, sunburnt- really in a romantic place as you can imagine. On the way back to our rooms, I mentioned that I was planning to wear jeans to dinner instead of the dress I brought. Meghan, knowing what was about to happen exclaimed “NO!” and politely but persistently asked that I change my mind (in hindsight I am so glad she did!). We had a great dinner at The Pier, right in the heart of downtown looking over Lake Superior. As the sun was setting with pinks and oranges bouncing off the lake and we were enjoying our after dinner drinks, Matt began telling me how much he loved his life with me in it. Being completely unaware of what was actually happening, I started to reciprocate my feelings and explain how much I loved him too. Later, come to find out, Pat was ready to kick me under the table and let me know this was not a two sided conversation…

Remember that Matt’s legs are terribly sunburnt from sitting in a kayak but he continues talking and before I know it he is down on one knee with a ring extended out to me asking me to marry him. I was so surprised, I looked at him and all I could say was “SHUT UP!”

Once I gained a slight amount of composure, I said yes, of course! Our friends cheered, the nearby tables realized what was happening and congratulated us, and our amazing waitress brought us a dessert to celebrate. I was still in shock with everything but it was the perfect proposal.

After dinner we continued to walk around town and just enjoy our engagement. All of the cute shops were fun to walk through and the owners were excited to hear our news. My favorite stop was The Candy Shoppe where I picked out a ring pop to enjoy alongside my new ring! Still being a little shaky from the nights events, I actually ended up knocking over a box of candy. As I was picking it all up, Matt proudly exclaimed that it was ok, I could do what I want because we were getting married!!

After the sun set completely it was time to let EVERYONE know! Opening the door to our room, we saw the most beautiful flowers and champagne that Emily arranged with Winfield Inn. Sitting on the porch with that bottle of champagne, cigars and our friends, we alternated calling everyone that needed to know. It was a beautiful night with the moon shining over the trees. A great way to end a perfect day!

The next morning, still elated from the day before, we packed up everything and met Emily and family in town for brunch at The Egg Toss. We enjoyed some celebratory mimosas and continued our stroll through the town’s stores. After our thanks and goodbyes, we set off down the road back to Milwaukee, nearly planning the entire wedding in the car on our way home.

Are there any recommendations you have for someone looking to propose in the Bayfield area?
Plan your trip when that January cabin fever is really setting in. It’s nice to just unplug for a weekend, enjoy the great outdoors and experience a new area. What’s so fun about Bayfield is the natural lake town feel. Everyone is so kind and laid back and the views of Lake Superior are amazing. A never ending supply of outdoor adventuring right at your finger tips. For the actual “big question,” Matt has said it was so helpful having Emily with Lace & Brass Events recommend places to go and thing to do during the trip so the happy couple can focus on one another.

A Madeline Island Proposal

February 8, 2017

How do you plan a surprise proposal without your sweetheart catching on? Pop the question on vacation, of course! It seems that every year we hear about a handful of lucky couples who get engaged over Apple Festival weekend here in Bayfield. It is, after all, the perfect opportunity to come visit this beautiful area with your significant other, family and friends. What better time to get down on one knee than on a crisp fall day with apple orchards, wineries, and the beautiful Lake Superior all around you?

Read all about Tyler and Delaney’s proposal that happened while they were visiting Bayfield and Madeline Island the weekend of Apple Festival!

Tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you met.

My fiance, Tyler and I met a long time ago in middle school. We started dating during our junior year of high school, and were fortunate enough to both decide to go to the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities campus after we graduated. We continued dating throughout our college careers. We both graduated in 2015, and he accepted a job as an engineer while I moved on to attend the College of Pharmacy at the U.

What made Tyler choose this area?

My parents have gone camping on Madeline Island during Apple Fest weekend with some of their friends and family every year since before I was born- I think it’s been about 28 years. I had never been to Bayfield or Madeline Island, so Tyler and I thought it would be fun to go with them one year. Although I was a bit hesitant about going due to the weather (it’s cold in October!), Tyler was adamant we go so I gladly followed. He had been to Madeline Island before as his relatives have a cabin on it, so he knew it would be a wonderful spot for a proposal.

Tell us about your Bayfield/Madeline Island trip and your proposal!

We went to Bayfield on the Saturday of Apple Fest weekend and wandered the festival during the day, eating, drinking, and seeing the sights with my family and friends. After a bit, we decided to get on the ferry and head over to the island. We made a stop by Tom’s Burned Down Cafe and then Tyler and I went off on our own to explore the island.

After walking a while, we came across a beach and went and sat on a bench to watch the setting sun. He reached into his pocket, got down on one knee, and said the words I’d been waiting to hear for about 6 years: “Delaney, will you marry me?”

We then went to our campsite to celebrate with my family. Tyler had told my parents of his plan a few weeks earlier, so they were prepared with champagne to pop as we celebrated our engagement all night!

Are there any recommendations you have for someone looking to propose in the Bayfield area?

I certainly recommend proposing by the water, it’s so beautiful and adds that “special something” to a proposal. It also adds a little extra romance to have plans as a getaway, so that some time can be spent just the two of you before the overwhelming amount of well wishes are sent from friends and family once you make your announcement. Of course, I’m partial to planning a camping trip for the proposal, but that’s just because it was my fairytale come true!

An Outdoor Winter Wedding, Bayfield Style

January 4, 2017

Here in Bayfield, Wisconsin we don’t hibernate inside all winter waiting for summer to come. We embrace the beautiful snow, cold, ice caves and the many outdoor activities and sports. Mollie + Isaac did not disappoint with their outdoor January wedding.

Read more about this beautiful winter wedding along with their advice for planning a winter wedding of your own!

Tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you met.

Isaac is a full time fire fighter and EMT in Burnsville, MN . I own my own hair and makeup business and do lots and lots of weddings! Isaac and I met a few years before we started dating at our CrossFit gym in the cities, we quickly become best of friends and didn’t see anything beyond that. All of our friends thought a little bit different and asked when we were going to start dating! Once we finally decided to go for it we never looked back, and each day was better than the last! We now have a perfect little baby boy Axel and couldn’t be more thrilled for our little family! We can’t wait for forever!

Give us a detailed look into your wedding day.

We had a very laid back casual outdoor January wedding! I was on Madeline Island with family and a few close friends getting really at a family home, took the ferry across bright and early so I could be able to style Isaac’s hair… he had strict orders of keeping his eyes shut.

We then traveled to Isaac’s family’s dock on Lake Superior to do our first look, we couldn’t have picked a better location! Then off to Good Thyme for our ceremony where my brother officiated our big “I Dos.” Someone was definitely watching out for us- gave us 40 degree weather in January! We then ate a wonderful brunch and our perfect day was complete.

What drew you to have your wedding here in the Bayfield area?

Isaac was born and raised in Bayfield and I have family connections to the area, having traveled there a lot growing up. It seemed the perfect place, and not far for the majority of our family.

What advice would you have for someone planning a winter wedding?

The advice I tell all of my brides – Don’t worry and stress about the small things, no one is going to notice besides you. Think about the big picture and the outcome of the day: getting to marry your best friend!

A Bayfield Apple Festival Proposal

November 16, 2016

We love hearing love stories, especially those that take place here in Bayfield, WI! When we first heard about Stephen and Melissa’s proposal that happened Apple Festival weekend we knew how special it was.

From the couple, “Our Bayfield trip is something we always look forward to and 2016 proved to be yet another great year!  Great people and great memories sure to last a lifetime!” Read ahead to hear their story, and how Stephen pulled off his beautiful surprise proposal!

manitou-sailing

Tell us a little bit about yourselves and how you met.
Stephen does sales for a Life Safety company and I work at a dental office and have my own Pure Romance business.  I have a daughter and found it difficult to meet other people looking to date.  Stephen and I met on OkCupid and had our first date at a Mexican restaurant.  We had so much fun that night, he even escorted me to Walmart where I had to pick up a pair of fuzzy socks for a friend’s birthday- talk about a keeper!

What made you choose Bayfield?
Stephen’s parents own a place up in Montreal and he had been to Bayfield before, telling me how gorgeous it was.  In 2015 we made our first trip up to Apple Festival where we shopped, ate and drank our way through the day and it was perfect!  It was only fitting to go back for 2016.  Little did I know, he had MANY more tricks up his sleeve for this year!

Tell us about your Bayfield trip and the proposal!
Stephen had a lot of help from Manitou Sailing when it came to the proposal.  We were supposed to take a sailboat out that day for a nice sail, but it was pretty cloudy and there were some strong winds making about 6-8 foot waves.  Kat with Manitou Sailing brought us a bottle of wine and champange to make it all come together.  We were able to  sit there to chat have a glass or two of wine and before I knew it, Stephen asked me to be his wife! After that we spent the day shopping, drinking, and eating our way through Apple Festival.  The last surprise he had up his sleeve was Old Rittenhouse Inn!!  He acted like we were going to have to drive home and when we got back to the car he opened the trunk and took out our bags.  The service at Old Rittenhouse Inn was AMAZING.  They went above and beyond and made our weekend one we will never forget.   It was an incredibly memorable experience.

Are there any recommendations you have for someone looking to propose in Bayfield?
If you are planning on getting engaged in Bayfield don’t wait!  It’s a hidden gem that I am so happy to have apart our lives forever!

Groom’s Dinner, Bayfield Style

November 3, 2016

Also known as a rehearsal dinner, a groom’s dinner is a smaller, more intimate event typically held the night before the bride and groom’s wedding. Here in the Bayfield area, many couples get pretty creative with their groom’s dinners!

Read ahead to learn how to plan your groom’s dinner, especially if you’d like it to be done Bayfield style!

11708061_10153159923054205_2473072701837666694_oGroom’s Dinner at Good Thyme Restaurant

The Who
Typically a groom’s dinner’s attendees are the bride and groom’s immediate families along with their wedding party. Spouses/dates of any immediate family and wedding party members should be invited, along with your officiant and their spouse. Of course, the guest list can fluctuate to include any out of town guests, family members or anybody else for that matter!

The Why
Groom’s dinners are intended to be a celebratory night where the families and wedding party can spend more intimate time together. A relaxed setting with your closest family and friends allows your wedding weekend to kick off to a really great start. You will be able to loosen up some of the anticipation you have been building up for your wedding weekend!

Cheese Curds Catered by Good Thyme Catering

The What
What is the difference between a groom’s dinner and rehearsal dinner? Traditionally this event is hosted by the groom’s family, in this case it would be referred to as the groom’s dinner. If the couple, bride’s parents or mix of all three are hosting the event then it would be referred to as the rehearsal dinner. Groom’s dinners can be anything from a backyard BBQ to a formal banquet dinner.

The Bayfield Style
Here in Bayfield we see a wide array of groom’s dinners. Good Thyme Restaurant had a groom’s dinner under a tent on the restaurant’s property where they served a fresh crab boil! The tables were covered with kraft paper, boots filled with succulents and wood crab mallets!

Lace & Brass Events had clients looking for a fun and relaxed meal for their rehearsal dinner. They recommended fish fry and beer! Having Lake Superior at our doorstep allows many local restaurants and caterers to serve fresh fish caught that morning.

Whether you are going to a restaurant for your groom’s dinner, hiring a caterer or doing the DIY approach the biggest tip we have is to relax and enjoy this intimate time with your closest family and friends!
